The hopes that the Canadiens could pull out a win in San Jose were all but dashed at the midpoint of the opening period when a routine shot found its way into the net to put the Sharks up 2-0. Montreal did play well in the game, so while it was a disappointing loss, it shouldn’t have been a discouraging one.

Especially not with Carey Price in net this evening. The netminder will be aiming for his 29th win of the season and 315th of his NHL career, a mark no other goaltender in the franchise’s history has attained.

The thinking was to put Price in for the two games bookending the Sharks match, ones versus inferior competition when odds would be heavily stacked in Montreal’s favour. The goal was to grab at least four of the six points available on the trip, with any others from the San Jose contest being a bonus.

Despite their place near the bottom of the Western Conference, the Ducks have been enjoying a spate of good play over the past week, playing spoiler versus the Colorado Avalanche and Arizona Coyotes before forcing the St. Louis Blues into a last-minute comeback to avoid defeat. The two points aren’t a given tonight, but if the Canadiens want to maintain their place in the post-season race, they need to be taken.
