The Montreal Canadiens and Philadelphia Flyers have played two games already this season. Each has scored five goals in one game. Each has allowed five goals in the other.

For the two teams closest to the post-season cutoff (Montreal actually ranks 15th in the league standings, and Philadelphia 17th), it’s a fitting summary of seasons filled with highs and lows that were just about good enough, but looking not quite as consistent as needed to survive past the 82nd game of the campaign.

It likely won’t be long before the usual 18-skater formations for both sides begin to see some unfamiliar faces as prospects get a trial run in the big leagues. Still clinging to at least mathematical playoff hopes, the full NHL squads are still in action tonight, with whichever team wins getting one final boost of hope for a miraculous run in the final 10 games.
