Team USA is faring well at the 2019 World Juniors, winning all but one game they’ve played. The one overtime loss was also perhaps their most impressive game of the tournament, with a four-goal comeback in the third to give themselves an even chance at a win in extra time. The Americans have allowed just a single goal in their last three games — including the final preliminary-round contest versus the Finns — as Cayden Primeau has been doing a great job between the pipes after starting the tournament as USA’s backup.

The loss to the US earlier in the tournament happened when the Finns were struggling across the board, and that cold start was threatening to knock them out of the tournament before the semifinals began. But they discovered the play most expected them to display when the elimination matches arrived, ending Canada’s run in overtime in the quarter-finals, and preventing Switzerland from making a first trip to the WJC final with a 6-1 win last night.

It will therefore be a much different team that the US sees in the second meeting between the two nations at this year’s event. It’s set up to be a good Gold Medal Game between two of the countries that have enjoyed the most success at the Junior level in recent history.
