Canada will begin its defence of the World Junior Hockey Championship trophy it hoisted one year ago in Buffalo, New York with a game on the opening day of the 2019 tournament. Maxime Comtois is the only player on the team who has a gold medal from that event, and as the captain he’ll be looked to, by coaches and teammates alike, as the one to lead them to the title yet again.

There’s a long way to go before the medals are handed out on January 5, with nine other teams eager to snatch the top prize away from the nation that calls the game of hockey its own. Denmark is one of the teams that sits outside the top group of main contenders, but the country has had its fair share of incredible performances against those ranked above them.

In 2015, Russia needed a shootout to get by the Danes in the preliminary round. The next year, it took overtime in the quarter-final for the Russians to advance. They handed what was nearly a catastrophic loss to Finland in 2017, forcing the team that had won gold a year earlier to go through the relegation round.

On paper, the 2019 iteration shouldn’t pose much of a threat to Canada, but that has never deterred the Danes before.

It will be a good test for both sides as they get the tournament started, setting the tone for what is a whirlwind 11 days of hockey action.
