Group A Preliminary Games
4 PM ET: Russia vs Denmark
Montreal Canadiens prospect Alexander Romanov and Team Russia start their tournament against Denmark. They will look to make a statement as they battle for the top of the group with Canada, who defeated Denmark yesterday. For Denmark, it is a tough ask to come back less than 24 hours after losing 14-0 to Canada against another tough opponent. Who will get the start in goal, and how will the team respond? The game will be shown on TSN 1/4/5 and RDS in Canada and NHL Network in the USA.
8 PM ET: Canada vs Switzerland
Canada is coming off of a 14-0 win yesterday to open the tournament and now get set to face another red-and-white team. Ian Scott will get his first start of the tournament and it will be interesting to see how Canada puts their foot back on the gas after yesterday’s win. Switzerland had some very good moments against the Czech Republic before falling in overtime. How they bounce back from that disappointment will be important against a Canadian team riding high. Of course, we know how their coach may feel about this game. Although they kept it very close when the two teams met in the pre-tournament. The game will be on TSN 1/4/5 and RDS in Canada and NHL Network in the United States.
Group B Preliminary Games
6:30 PM ET: Sweden vs Slovakia
Sweden beat Finland yesterday to extend their round robin winning streak to an unbelievable 45 games, and will look to solidify their positioning with another win against Slovakia. If Sweden gets a lead, I’m not sure I see them relinquishing it in this tournament. Slovakia had a lead through 40 minutes against the United States before allowing two goals in the third period. It was an encouraging start for them, and they will look to keep the momentum going against another top team in Sweden. The game will be on TSN 2 and RDS2 in Canada.
10:30 PM ET: Finland vs Kazakhstan
Finland will look to rebound after a tough loss against Sweden where they failed to generate much offence for most of the game. Their game on Thursday may be the perfect recipe to unlock some of the talent that they have. However, Finland has had a rough couple of years batting back from adversity. They’ll need to bounce back against Kazakhstan. Kazakhstan will be making their 2019 tournament debut, and their first game in the top pool since 2009. They will be in tough to stay above water in what may be the deeper of the two pools. The game will be on TSN 5 and RDS in Canada, NHL Network in the US.
