2018 NHL All-Star Skills Competition: Events, participants, start time, and how to watch

See the winners and full results here.

In previous years, the Skills Competition had a points-based structure, with the Eastern and Western Conferences (or some other separation of the players) sending participants head-to-head in various tests.

This year, the events will be contested on an individual basis, with the winner of each of six events pocketing $25,000.

With that format in mind, the focus will be more on particular skills than things like relays and the breakaway challenge. Three staple events remain from previous years, while three new ones will be added in 2018.

How to watch

Start time: 7:00 PM EST / 4:00 PM PST
In Canada: CBC, Sportsnet, Sportsnet Now (English), TVA Sports (French)
In the US: NBCSN

Events

Fastest Skater

Eight players receive one timed lap around the rink in their direction of choice. At the end, the one with the fastest time walks away with the prize money.

Participants

Brayden Point, F, Tampa Bay Lightning
Zach Werenski, D, Columbus Blue Jackets
Rickard Rakell, F, Anaheim Ducks
Noah Hanifin, D, Carolina Hurricanes
Josh Bailey, F, New York Islanders
Nathan MacKinnon, F, Colorado Avalanche
Jack Eichel, F, Buffalo Sabres
Connor McDavid, F, Edmonton Oilers

Passing Challenge

This event holds the familiar test of players having to put a puck in several mini nets spread throughout the neutral zone, but also includes a few other challenges this year: a give-and-go portion, and having to hit randomly-lit tagets with pucks.

Participants

Nikita Kucherov, F, Tampa Bay Lightning
Claude Giroux, F, Philadelphia Flyers
Brayden Schenn, F, St. Louis Blues
Oliver Ekman-Larsson, D, Arizona Coyotes
Eric Staal, F, Minnesota Wild
Alex Pietrangelo, D, St. Louis Blues
Kris Letang, D, Pittsburgh Penguins
Drew Doughty, D, Los Angeles Kings

Save Streak

The only event for goaltenders, they will face a team of nine shooters from one opposing division on breakaways, attempting to stop everything they face. Should a save be made on the ninth shooter — the division captain — the order will repeat until a goal is scored. The goaltender posting the longest save streak will be declared the winner, with total number of saves serving as the tie break.

Participants

Henrik Lundqvist, New York Rangers (vs. Central Division shooters)
Connor Hellebuyck, Winnipeg Jets (vs Pacific Division)
Pekka Rinne, Nashville Predators (vs. Metropolitan Division)
Marc-Andre Fleury, Vegas Golden Knights (vs. Atlantic Division)
Andrei Vasilevskiy, Winnipeg Jets (vs. Central Division)

Puck Control Relay

A combination of the cone course and the quick stick-handles through a line of pucks join a new event that sees players needing to get the puck through a randomly selected target that will test their reflexes. It is a timed event with the fastest player claiming the prize.

Participants

Johnny Gaudreau, F, Calgary Flames
Aleksander Barkov, F, Florida Panthers
Erik Karlsson, D, Ottawa Senators
John Tavares, F, New York Islanders
Connor McDavid, F, Edmonton Oilers
Auston Matthews, F, Toronto Maple Leafs
Tyler Seguin, F, Dallas Stars
Patrick Kane, F, Chicago Blackhawks

Hardest Shot

Players fire a puck as hard as they can into an empty net. Each participant gets two shots during this event, with the player with the highest recorded speed being named the winner.

Participants

John Klingberg, D, Dallas Stars
Alex Ovechkin, F, Washington Capitals
P.K. Subban, D, Nashville Predators
Brent Burns, D, San Jose Sharks
Steven Stamkos, F, Tampa Bay Lightning

Accuracy Shooting

The usual procedure of hitting foam targets located in each fo the four corners of the net gives way to a challenge that has five targets to be hit in a randomly determined order. A shooter will have three seconds to hit the target that lights up before another gets selected. The player with the fastest time wins, so hitting all five targets in five shots doesn’t necessarily mean that player will beat a less-efficient shooter.

Participants

Brian Boyle, F, New Jersey Devils
Blake Wheeler, F, Winnipeg Jets
James Neal, F, Vegas Golden Knights
Brock Boeser, F, Vancouver Canucks
Brad Marchand, F, Boston Bruins
Anze Kopitar, F, Los Angeles Kings
Sidney Crosby, F, Pittsburgh Penguins
Steven Stamkos, F, Tampa Bay Lightning
