In previous years, the Skills Competition had a points-based structure, with the Eastern and Western Conferences (or some other separation of the players) sending participants head-to-head in various tests.
This year, the events will be contested on an individual basis, with the winner of each of six events pocketing $25,000.
With that format in mind, the focus will be more on particular skills than things like relays and the breakaway challenge. Three staple events remain from previous years, while three new ones will be added in 2018.

Events
Fastest Skater
Eight players receive one timed lap around the rink in their direction of choice. At the end, the one with the fastest time walks away with the prize money.

Passing Challenge
This event holds the familiar test of players having to put a puck in several mini nets spread throughout the neutral zone, but also includes a few other challenges this year: a give-and-go portion, and having to hit randomly-lit tagets with pucks.

Save Streak
The only event for goaltenders, they will face a team of nine shooters from one opposing division on breakaways, attempting to stop everything they face. Should a save be made on the ninth shooter — the division captain — the order will repeat until a goal is scored. The goaltender posting the longest save streak will be declared the winner, with total number of saves serving as the tie break.

Puck Control Relay
A combination of the cone course and the quick stick-handles through a line of pucks join a new event that sees players needing to get the puck through a randomly selected target that will test their reflexes. It is a timed event with the fastest player claiming the prize.

Hardest Shot
Players fire a puck as hard as they can into an empty net. Each participant gets two shots during this event, with the player with the highest recorded speed being named the winner.

Accuracy Shooting
The usual procedure of hitting foam targets located in each fo the four corners of the net gives way to a challenge that has five targets to be hit in a randomly determined order. A shooter will have three seconds to hit the target that lights up before another gets selected. The player with the fastest time wins, so hitting all five targets in five shots doesn’t necessarily mean that player will beat a less-efficient shooter.
