Victor Mete was the biggest surprise in the Montreal Canadiens’s training camp, not only taking a spot on the roster at just 19 years of age, but slotting in beside Shea Weber on the top defensive pairing.
Being 19, and having played his ninth game of the season, the rules of the Collective Bargaining Agreement give the Canadiens a choice: they can keep him in the NHL to continue to learn on the job, or return him to his junior team — the London Knights — and extend his entry-level contract by another season.
Mete has shown he has what it takes to play in the world’s top league, with two assists and a positive shot-attempt differential, while also playing an effective defensive style and receiving more than 20 minutes of ice time in recent games.
The decision won’t be based on his ability to stay in the NHL, but on whether the team thinks it’s worth burning a year of his rookie deal, putting him one year closer to becoming a restricted free agent.
Should Victor Mete stay with the Canadiens?
