From the moment Team Canada hit the ice to start the World Cup of Hockey, their dominance over the other teams was blatant. Undefeated in every game on their way to the final, their position as tournament favourites has never been in doubt.
But while Canada’s presence in the final was always expected, that of their opponents was certainly not. Team Europe stunned Sweden with a thrilling overtime victory, punching their ticket to face a team that already beat them in the group stage.
And though Canada is again expected to emerge from the contest victorious, they still have to play the games. Europe has a goaltender whose ability to capture lightning in a bottle should be well known to Montreal Canadiens fans; Jaroslav Halak. His team’s need for him to recapture some of his 2010 playoffs magic could never be greater.
After all, opposite Halak will be current Montreal Canadiens keeper, and arguably the best in the world, Carey Price. Not to mention that Canadian offensive onslaught that has scored no less than four goals in every game they’ve played, including that 4-1 victory over Europe.
It will be a tall order, but if Team Europe has shown anything in this tournament, it’s that they have the ability to provide upsets.
The puck drops at 8:00 PM EDT, at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario.
