The wait is finally over. After a lengthy pre-tournament schedule, teams take to the ice in Toronto today to kick off the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. First up is the veteran Team Europe versus the physical style of the Americans.
Europe was given a tough draw in to start their tune up games, by facing Team North America twice, and falling victim to their intensity and speed both times. They rebounded in their final game, dominating Sweden 6-2, and earning a much needed win.
The United States began their pre-tournament games by playing Canada twice, splitting the series with the tournament favourites. It was clear from the get go that the USA was going to try to set the tone via physical play, and it would be surprising if they abandoned that strategy seeing as head coach John Tortorella has made it clear that’s the game plan.
Due to the World Cup format, both teams will be eager to get a win under their belt, which should bode well in terms of entertainment value today. Expect an intense, skilled game.
The puck drops at 3:30 PM EDT, at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto.
