Development camp this year has shown us one thing for sure; Mikhail Sergachev has serious skill. When the Canadiens took him at ninth-overall in the draft, they knew they were getting a good player, and camp proved that he is arguably the most exciting prospect in the Habs' system right now.
Now, you really don't want to pile pressure on an 18-year-old defenceman, but he will probably get a look from the Canadiens. He believes that he has what it takes to make the team right away, and he'll face an uphill battle, but it is clear that the kid has some serious game.
Windsor will also be hosting the Memorial Cup next year, so it might be best to let him go down and lead the charge there for one more season. The Canadiens have a pretty healthy stockpile of defence to work with, so they're not in a rush to get him up to the NHL.
During camp, he even mixed it up with Michael McCarron a little bit. They're both big boys, but the much larger McCarron was not at all someone Sergachev was afraid of. In the end, it was just friendly competition.
McCarron on mixing it up with Sergachev: "It's just a battle. We've been going at each other for a couple days now. He's an amazing player. He can play both sides of the puck... He's got all the attributes." So there really is no controversy to speak of, it really was just two competitors playing hockey.
Sergachev also spoke to the media, and for the rest of the summer, he'll be back in Russia training with Ivan Provorov, getting ready for training camp.
Only time will tell what the future holds, but for now, it is clear that Habs fans should be getting very excited about Mikhail Sergachev.
