The annual free agent frenzy begins tomorrow as the market for players opens on Friday at noon.
The Montreal Canadiens will try to solve their scoring woes and also stock up on depth players to bolster their ranks. Given Marc Bergevin's recent seismic activities and a cap space of around $9.8 M (minus new contracts for Daniel Carr and Phillip Danault), he will have more than enough space to entice a big name free agent or two.
There is of course also the ongoing potential that the team will rid themselves of David Desharnais and/or Alexei Emelin, who, combined, take up $7.1 M on the cap, bringing further change to the roster in what can be the biggest shakeup since the summer of 2009, when Bob Gainey traded for Scott Gomez and signed Brian Gionta, Mike Cammalleri, Paul Mara, Travis Moen, and Hal Gill, completely changing the team.
One big name already off the board is Steven Stamkos, who earlier in the week re-signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning, ending all speculation about his potential arrival in Montreal, but several other names have been associated with the Canadiens in recent weeks, including Milan Lucic and David Perron.
