Max Pacioretty missed a check in the offensive zone and lost a skate blade upon impact with the boards. The Kings took the puck up the ice and played some impromptu five on four ending with Anze Kopitar tipping home an Alec Martinez shot to put the Kings up 1-0 less than a minute into the first period.
The Kings definitely had the jump on the Habs early on. The Habs got caught in a cycle of icing the puck, and paid for it by giving up the second goal of the game off a won faceoff by Jeff Carter to Tanner Pearson who moved quickly off the boards and into the slot where he fired a quick shot to put the Kings up 2-0.
The Habs' first shot on net came nearly ten minutes into the first period on their sixth shot attempt. Note the Habs had a powerplay four minutes into the first period. They look tired, playing their third game in four nights.
The Habs pulled to within one goal after they failed to score on their second man advantage of the period. The goal came off a won faceoff by Tomas Plekanec to P.K. Subban who skated off the blue-line and fired off a bomb to put the Habs on the board.
The Habs trail 2-1 heading into the second period. They trail in shots on net by a wide margin, but trail in possession by only two shot attempts (17-15 CF for the Kings), although they definitely escaped that period being down just by one goal.
