The Habs did not do very well to contain the Oilers early on, allowing them six shot attempts within the first 1:17. Within the first five minutes of the game, Connor McDavid's line had created six shot attempts of the Oilers' total eight. Ben Scrivens made a couple of key saves to keep it even while the Habs got their game going.
This would end up being key, as the Habs went on the powerplay and moved the puck around, freezing the Oilers with a lot of traffic in front of Cam Talbot. Tomas Plekanec blasted a one-timer that was deflected by Brendan Gallagher to give the Habs a 1-0 lead.
The Habs got into penalty trouble right after the goal, with Jordan Eberle taking some damage to get his team two powerplays in a row. The Habs killed off both penalties. Ben Scrivens looked stronger with every save, making a couple of solid stops on the consecutive penalties.
Once again this would be rewarded with a Canadiens' goal. This time, Lars Eller sent a breakout pass to Tomas Fleischmann who took it across the Oilers' blue line and fed it back to Eller who was uncovered in the slot. Eller made no mistake on his shot, burying it to put the Habs up 2-0.

The Canadiens finished the period down 19-12 in five-on-five shot attempts. They lead 2-0 heading into the second, and left the ice to the sound of applause for the first time in a while.
