Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs third period thread

The Habs killed off the remainder of the Leafs powerplay carried over from the first period and minutes later went on a powerplay of their own with Daniel Winnik sent off for high-sticking. Max Pacioretty was set up for a clear shot from the right faceoff dot that Bernier juggled, leaving Brendan Gallagher alone in front to tip home the rebound. The goal was overturned immediately and after further review as Gallagher batted the puck in just a hair over the crossbar.

The Habs didn't score on the remaining powerplay time, and the game hit kind of a gridlock. Devante Smith-Pelly broke the logjam with just over nine minutes left in the second, with a huge battle taking place in front of the net involving Michael McCarron. Smith-Pelly swiped home a loose puck that reached the net from the point off an Alexei Emelin shot. Michael McCcarron earned his first NHL point on the play.

The Habs had a couple of powerplays in the final minutes of the second period, but couldn't extend their lead. The best chance over the two powerplays went to the Leafs, when Mike Condon stopped Leo Komarov on a clearcut breakaway caused by a turnover at the Leaf's blueline by Alex Galchenyuk.

The Habs fired off 18 shots in the second period, but only lead in fiv on five possession by a slight margin with a 36-30 lead in five on five shot attempts.
