The Habs got a powerplay 17 seconds into the second period with Sidney Crosby sent off for tripping Brendan Gallagher. The powerplay failed to hit the mark again, although the Habs put up four shot attempts and two shots on net.
Torrey Mitchell was sent off for high-sticking on a play where he was elbowed and threw his stick into Brian Dumoulin's chest in reaction. The Penguins would score 12 seconds into the powerplay, with Phil Kessel finding Patric Hornqvist going to the net with his stick on the ice to put the Penguins up 1-0.
P.K. Subban scored his second goal of the season, and first since October 24 (33 games), on a blast from the point off a faceoff win by Tomas Plekanec to end the longest goal drought in his career.

Under three minutes later, the Penguins regained the lead on a defensive breakdown between Nathan Beaulieu and Greg Pateryn, as Pateryn stepped up on a 2 on 2 leaving Brian Rust completely open in the slot, and Rust made no mistake when he was fed the puck by Nick Bonino to put the Penguins up 2-1. Michel Therrien was not happy after the goal.
The Habs ended the second period killing a penalty to Torrey Mitchell. They trail 2-1 heading into the second period.
