The Canadiens played a strong five minutes to start the first period, but would end up giving up the first goal on an Alex Galchenyuk giveaway at the Philadelphia blue-line to Sean Couturier who sent Brayden Schenn on as clearcut of a breakaway you can get, allowing Schenn to pick his spot and bury it to put the Flyers up 1-0.
Devante Smith-Pelly drew a hooking penalty to give his team a chance to draw even on the powerplay a minute-and-a-half later. The Habs' powerplay was only able to generate one shot on net on three shot attempts. Michel Therrien used a secondary unit with Paul Byron and Tomas Fleischmann between Tomas Plekanec, which was not able to get established in the offensive zone.
The Canadiens continued to build on their good start, putting up fifteen shot attempts in the first fifteen minutes of the first period, but only recording three shots on net. On their fourth shot on net, Alex Galchenyuk redirected a low shot from Mark Barberio and tied the game 1-1. Mark Barberio is certainly earning his place in the lineup, registering his second assist in four games on the play. Barberio was +3 in Friday's Winter Classic Victory.
By the end of the period, the Canadiens led 18-17 in shot attempts, but trailed 11-4 in shots on net.
Jeff Petry took a penalty with 21 seconds remaining in the first period for holding. The Flyers will have 1:39 of powerplay time to start the second period.
