Torrey Mitchell was sent off for tripping 1:13 into the second period, allowing the Blackhawks to establish an attack on the powerplay that they followed through for the first seven minutes of the period where they had six shot attempts to the Canadiens' three.
Ben Scrivens was solid making a number of key saves to allow the Canadiens to get some form of offensive-zone presence going. This is a really defensive game from the Habs who are focusing more on managing the Blackhawks' offensive weapons than pouring on the offensive pressure.
The Habs eventually gave up the go-ahead goal after Tomas Plekanec was sent off for high-sticking in the midst of a Habs' powerplay. An awkward three-way passing play between Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa ended in Jonathan Toews tapping home his eightteenth goal of the season to put the Blackhawks up 2-1. It appeared that Jonathan Toews was offside on the play leading to the goal, but Michel Therrien did not challenge.
Jonathan Toews would put the Blackhawks up by two with 1:21 left in the second period. The Habs will have a huge mountain to climb coming back in this one, against a team that has lost only five times at home in regulation so far this season, has not lost in regulation when leading after two periods (20-0-1), and is seeking their eleventh win in a row.
