David Desharnais, Alex Galchenyuk and Dale Weise were on the ice 34 seconds into the game when Robby Fabbri was rewarded with his eleventh goal of the season after the Canadiens' newly formed second line was beaten by the Blues' forecheck.
The Canadiens were awarded a powerplay a few minutes later, getting a chance to even the score, but couldn't convert on their advantage upon which they had four shot attempts and two shots on net. It was a good effort, but lacking the definitive edge that gets you goals.
Even though the Canadiens were trailing, they were matching the Blues in shot attempts and intensity, and eventually took over the game. The Habs didn't allow the Blues a single shot attempt in the final eight minutes of the first period, and finished the period with a 23-16 lead in shot attempts, and 18-9 lead in shots on net.
The Habs will just have to keep plugging away. It's 1-0 heading into the second period.
