The Canadiens came out crashing Ben Bishop's net to start the game and drew a penalty with  Matthew Carle taking exception to Brendan Gallagher's presence around the crease and getting a little too rough with his stick in retaliation. The Habs controlled the puck and dished around trying to set up that perfect play that has eluded them all but once since the playoffs started. They did not convert, but at least were able to maintain their tempo, and kept coming at the Lightning, getting up 9-4 on shot attempts when Jeff Petry caught Ben Bishop moving the other way and buried a top-corner shot from the point to give the Habs a 1-0 lead.

The Canadiens had a 14-6 lead in shot attempts when Brandon Prust was charged for two penalties, one for roughing and another for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Habs killed off both penalties, but took a penalty right after with P.K. Subban getting too zealous in front of his own net with his stick, and was sent off for cross-checking. The Lightning finally broke through the Habs' penalty-kill for their first powerplay goal of the series to tie the game 1-1 with 24 seconds remaining in the first period.
