The Habs had the early jump, getting a couple of chances on Ben Bishop that barely failed to beat him. The Canadiens' forecheck caused a number of turnovers in the Lightning zone, with the Habs showing fresher legs than the Bolts and putting up 10 shot attempts against the Lightning's 4 by the first commercial break of the game. The Habs came out hitting, a game plan the Lightning may not have been expecting, ending the period with 19 hits to the Bolts' 11.
The Canadiens' new-look powerplay got a chance to go to work and didn't look much different. Once the Lightning killed it off, they regained composure after putting together structured penalty kill against an ineffective powerplay, and forced the Habs into their own zone for their most threatening shift of the game thus far. The Lightning were awarded a powerplay, with Alex Galchenyuk throwing the puck over the glass under pressure to clear the zone after an extended stay on the ice, along with P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov who were completely gassed. The Habs killed the penalty, and fought out the remainder of the first period.
Jeff Petry left the ice in a great deal of pain to end the period after blocking a shot from Jason Garrison off the inside of his foot. It could have just stung him, but with the injury occurring at the end of the period, we'll have to wait for the 2nd to begin for an update on Petry's status.
