Dustin Tokarski was called upon to make 3 saves before the Habs registered their first shot attempt. The Habs responded with 7 shot attempts in the next 2 minutes, and midway through the period had a large advantage in possession  at 69.56 CF% and leading 13-4 in shots on net, but Ondrej  Pavelec kept the Jets from giving up the early lead.

A sequence that began with a truculent hit by Andrew Ladd on Greg Pateryn ended with a goal by Dustin Byfuglien to give the Jets a 1-0 lead. Pateryn was hit twice on the play, first by Ladd, then again by Lee Stempniak who turned the puck over.

The Habs put on a ton of pressure in the first period but could not beat Ondrej Pavelec who made 20 saves on 29 shot attempts. The Canadiens walked out the first period with a 69.76 CF% but no goals.
