The Habs and Blues were going blow for blow until about the five minute mark of the first period when the Blues started to take over. At the 10 minute mark, the Blues led the Habs 8-6 in Corsi-For, but had only registered 3 shots on net. The Habs had blocked 7 shots by the end of the period, including 3 in those first ten minutes. By the time they scored to go up 1-0 on  a P.K. Subban slap pass tipped in by Alex Galchenyuk for his 17th goal of the season, the Habs had regained form and were in the lead in all categories.

The period ended with Steve Ott being put in the box for some roughing antics. The Habs were unable to generate a goal on the ensuing 53 seconds of powerplay, but ended the period with edge in the score. All other things remain even with both teams putting up 15 shot attempts each, and the Habs will start the second period with 1:07 of powerplay time.

The most succesful line for the Habs in the first period was the Eller-Plekanec-Galchenyuk line with an average CORSI-For % between the three players of 55.33.
