The Canadiens were penalized to start the second period, but held the NHL's best powerplay to just two shot attempts and one shot on net. The Canadiens did a great job at limiting the Bruins' chances, allowing them only five shot attempts in the first eight minutes of the second period.
Sven Andrighetto set up Max Pacioretty with a cross-crease pass, but Pacioretty was stopped by Tuuka Rask, who moments later made a couple of good saves on Paul Byron who found room to shoot in close. In the first nine minutes of the second period, the Canadiens had put up 13 shot attempts and 7 shots on net before drawing a penalty. On the ensuing powerplay the Canadiens would create a couple of scoring chances, but could not put one past Rask.
Christian Thomas took exception to a couple of rough hits from Torey Krug and took a roughing call at center ice in retaliation. The Habs gave up nothing on the ensuing Bruins' powerplay unless you count the three weak shot attempts the Bruins feebly put towards Mike Condon.
The Habs dominated the second period, but Tuuka Rask was the story, stopping all 12 shots sent his way. The Canadiens lead 26-14 in shots on net, and are dominating in 5 v 5 possession with 49 shot attempts to the Bruins' 30. Still, it remains 1-0 heading into the third period.
