Canadiens vs. Capitals third period thread

New, comments

The Habs have been attacking relentlessly, but trail 2-1 heading into the third.

Jean-Yves Ahern-USA TODAY Sports

The Habs continued pouring on the offense in the second period, equalling their first period shot output by the ten-minute mark. The Canadiens had adjusted in the intermission, and more of their attempts on net were making contact. Braden Holtby was acrobatic, stopping all ten shots thrown his way to that point, but the Habs would not let up and eventually went to work on the powerplay.

Lars Eller scored his seventh goal of the season as the powerplay neared its end, spinning to protect the puck before dumping a low back hand shot through Holtby's pads. The Habs took a penalty 17 seconds later, with Alexei Emelin sent off for hooking, but the NHL's second-best penalty kill prevailed.

The Canadiens had held the Capitals to six shots on on thirteen attempts when T.J. Oshie took a shot that rebounded off Mike Condon ten feet into the air, then off Condon's back and into the back of the net to restore the Caps' lead.

The Canadiens are dominating everywhere but on the scoreboard, with an outrageous lead in shot attempts (60-27) and shots on net (27-13).
