The Canadiens did not look good to start the game, giving up four shots within the first six minutes and only registering one of their own. After a very good penalty kill, the Habs turned over the puck in their own zone on a strong Capitals' forecheck allowing Nate Schmidt to lay in a shot that was tipped by Egveny Kuznetsov past Mike Condon to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead.

The Canadiens registered their second shot on net of the first period at the ten-minute mark. Alex Galchenyuk was left alone in front of the net and nearly slid the puck under Braden Holtby, but he managed to get a pad on the shot. The Canadiens managed to get the most five on five shot attempts in the first period with 13 to Capitals' 11, however, the Caps doubled the Canadiens in overall shots on net for the period 10-5.

Max Pacioretty came close to tying the game when he tipped a pass from Alex Galchenyuk off the crossbar on a late first period powerplay. The Habs will have 23 seconds of powerplay time to start the second period.
