The Habs are down 1-0 after a strong first period effort.

The first five minutes of the game proved to be a demonstration in skating that yielded only four total shot attempts, three for the Habs and one for the Sharks. The slow tension building boiled over, with a scrum after a whistle leading to a San Jose roughing penalty.

The Habs powerplay hasn't been producing a ton of goals lately, but it looked good in its first effort of the night, producing five shot attempts and two shots on net.The Sharks were intent on playing a physical style, and only recorded one shot on net in the first 16:30 of the game.

The Habs, meanwhile, had a 20-3 lead in shot attempts (including a Max Pacioretty slapper that rang off the post), and a 10-2 lead in shots on net. With no goals to show for their effort, the Sharks silenced the Bell Center, opening the scoring on a two on one completed perfectly by Patrick Marleau at 17:34 mark of the first period.

The Habs trail 1-0 heading into the second, going away into the intermission hoping something will give for them if they just keep up the effort.
