The Devils came out strong to begin the second period, mounting an attack of nine shot attempts to the Canadiens three within the first five minutes of the period. The Devils were using their usual lulling strategy to eliminate any willful enthusiasm from their opposition. The Habs looked like they were playing in quicksand.
The Devils had mounted a 10-2 lead for the period in shots on goal when Greg Pateryn unloaded a shot from the point that bounced off of Alex Galchenyuk's chest for his fourth goal in the last five games. Two-thirds of Galchenyuk's goals this season have come in the last five games. Mike Condon's solidity kept it scoreless, and eventually the Habs earned a lead and were sparked into life.
After being down by an eight-shot margin for the period, the Canadiens regained the lead in shots, ending the period up 18-17.
There are currently twelve teams in the NHL without a loss when leading after two periods. The Habs are actually not a part of that group, with a 3-3-1 record when leading after two. Here's hoping they can close out the Devils for their fourth win in that category.
