Pascal Dupuis scored 13 seconds into the game on a perfect pass down low from Sidney Crosby. The Habs responded with five shots attempts, and eventually drew a penalty. On the enusing powerplay, Andrei Markov would one-time an unscreened lazerbeam past Marc-Andre Fleury to tie the game. (1-1) for the Canadiens league-leading 16th powerplay goal of the season.

After the Canadiens had scored, they held the Penguins to one shot-attempt over the next four minutes. When Mike Condon did factor into the game, he was solid, making multiple saves in close. Condon faced 14 shots in the first period, with all but 2 shots coming from within 15 feet of his net, with one of those shots resulting in the opening goal by Pascal Dupuis.

Mark-Andre Fleury was high-sticked by his own man and had to leave the game for repairs. Jeff Zatkoff came in to replace Fleury with 4:47 remaining in the first period. Fleury would miss just over two minutes of play, returning at the 2:37 mark.

Olli Maata would book-end the first period for the Penguins by scoring with 48 seconds on clock. The Habs trail 2-1 heading into the second period.
