The Flames started the 2nd period with a powerplay, and scored just after Max Pacioretty's penalty expired to tie the game 1-1 with Jiri Hudler netting his 4th goal of the season. The Habs drew a penalty moments later, and started the powerplay with a trio of David Desharnais between Dale Weise and Alex Galchenyuk. It didn't work, leading to the line leaving the ice without registering a shot attempt.
It would be Nathan Beaulieu's goal moments later that would count as the first Canadiens' shot attempt of the period a low one-timer along the ice (similar to Dale Weise's 1st period goal) on a pass from Tomas Plekanec.
The lead would last 2:09, as Josh Jooris would beat home a rebound past Mike Condon to tie the game at 2. Dale Weise would keep the torrid pace of scoring going by wristing his 2nd goal of the game 2:16 later to restore the Canadiens lead. The scoring died down for about 6 minutes, then Paul Byron would feed a pass across the Devante Smith-Pelly for his 1st of the year to give the Habs a 2-goal lead.
If there's one thing opening your season 9-0 can do is that it can make you take for granted how hard it is to win a game. The Habs will still have their work cut out for them in the 3rd period. Hopefully Michel Therrien will give the chance to Lars Eller to redeem himself for whatever wrong has seen him benched, having only played 3:49 all game.
