Carey Price was excellent to start the 1st period, having to stand his ground in the blue paint as it was swarmed by Oilers' attackers multiple times before the ice barely had a scratch in it. By the 5-minute mark of the 1st period Price had made 4 saves on 6 shot attempts, with Taylor Hall's line having the most impact with a +4 line-Corsi-average to that point in the game.
Starting a game on the penalty kill is obviously not the best way to start a game, but the Canadiens would survive the beginning of the 1st period and go to work on the powerplay. After moving the puck around the point and sideboards, the Canadiens would lull the Oilers into a false sense of security and P.K. Subban would deliver a slow shot from the point to be tipped in by Brendan Gallagher for his 5th goal of the season. The line of Brendan Gallagher, Max Pacioretty and Tomas Plekanec have scored 17 goals in 11 games.
Torrey Mitchell would score his 5th goal of the season on a turnover forced by Devante Smith-Pelly to put the Habs up 2-0. Less than 1 minute later, Andrei Markov would find Alex Galchenyuk streaking towards Cam Talbot alone in the slot, and Galchenyuk would make no mistake on the one-timer to put the Habs up 3-0.
Each goal the Habs scored in the 1st period came from a different line. This is how the Canadiens won 9 games this season, and it looks to be how they plan to win their 10th. The Oilers have a chance to start the 2nd period to cut down the lead as they will be on the powerplay.
