Both rookie goalies had to be sharp to start the game, but especially Senators' Matt O'Connor, who had to deal with 10 shot attempts thrown his way before the 10 minute mark of the first period. On the 15th Canadiens' shot attempt of the period, Tomas Plekanec would use his familiar goal-line trick shot to fool O'Connor and put the Habs up 1-0. The Plekanec line would drive a lot of possession for the Habs in the first period, with the line combining for 29 CF.
Plekanec's second goal would come on the Canadiens 24th shot attempt and 15th shot of the period. The Canadiens definitely have the jump on the Senators, finishing the period 26-20 CF and 15-6 in shots. Mike Condon was excellent in his first period of play, stopping all 6 shots thrown his way.
