Alexei Emelin injury: Canadiens defenseman out with upper body injury

The Habs lost a defenseman midway through the third period against Washington.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Alexei Emelin fell awkwardly into the boards on a Washington Capitals forecheck midway through the period, and immediately went down the tunnel to get medical attention. The Canadiens announced fairly quickly afterwards that Emelin had suffered an upper body injury and would not return to the game.

The injury forced the Canadiens to shuffle their defense, though they made the odd decision to use Mike Weaver on the left instead of putting Nathan Beaulieu with P.K. Subban. In all likelihood, this will represent a huge opportunity for Jarred Tinordi, who will draw in if Emelin isn't good to go against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday.
