Plekanec named captain of Czech Olympic squad

After winning the Molson Cup for December on Saturday night, Tomas Plekanec gets more good news today.

The Czech Republic released it's Olympic roster this afternoon, and our very own Tomas Plekanec was named the captain of the team.

He'll lead a veteran heavy roster in Sochi, including his good friend Jaromir Jagr and Peter Nedved (yup, THAT Peter Nedved). Both players will be alternate captains for the team.

The Czech head coach mentioned that it was not hard to choose Plekanec as captain. "I know him from the beginning on the National team. He is dedicated and a complete player."

Another former Tomas who played for Montreal, Kaberle, was also named to the team. He is having a decent season with Kladno, and has produced 19 points in 32 games.

The Czechs are not considered favourites to medal, but in a short tournament anything can happen.

Plekanec was the Czech captain at the 2012 World Championship, where the Czechs won bronze. He was also one of the best players on the squad when the Czechs won the gold in 2011.
