For the first time ever, the Canadiens - Senators rivalry has evolved beyond the geographic and the contrived. Raphael Diaz laid a suicide pass on the tape of Lars Eller, and Eric Gryba obliged him, laying out Eller while catching a good portion of his head. Eller left the ice on stretcher, but not before leaving a pool of blood in his wake.
The Canadiens, having just tied the game, were able to begin to avenge the hit on Eller, as Gallagher and Plekanec combined to give the Canadiens the lead.
The Canadiens will look to finish out strong, and it remains to be seen if emotion can help them overcome the loss of Eller. While the Senators lost their sixth defenceman for the game, a player who was not even certain to be placed on the roster for tonight's game, the Canadiens lost a stud of a two-way centre and a man who was dominating the game up to the point of his injury. The Canadiens cannot replace Eller with another player from their roster, so someone's going to have to step up.
