World Juniors 2014: Canada vs Sweden pre-tournament game thread

Bruce Bennett

In their second matchup of the preliminaries before the World Juniors, Canada faces off against Sweden.

After a comeback win over Finland on Friday, Team Canada will face a stiffer challenge in Team Sweden. Canada made two cuts following the 4-2 win, sending Damon Severson and Hunter Shinkaruk (who is suspected to be suffering from injury) back home.

The game took on another angle yesterday after Swedish star Andre Burakovsky (yes, a Swede with a Russian name) said that he believes that Sweden has a much stronger team on paper than Canada does. Charles Hudon responded "I've never seen two paper players play on ice", later adding "We're ready for that game and I think they are too."

In actuality, with Sweden's silver medal finish last year and 9 returning players, including a possible 10th with Filip Forsberg possibly cleared for action after a concussion, Sweden's roster does look stronger than Canada's on paper. Whether that will hold through to the tournament is another question, but as much as Canadian forwards are playing off Burakovsky's comments as being cocky, he was just being honest.

Players to watch in the contest for Habs fans are prospects Sebastian Collberg, who went 1-on-5 against Team USA and scored, and Jacob De La Rose for Team Sweden, meanwhile Charles Hudon may not play for Team Canada, meaning that he's a lock for the team, which we pretty much already knew. Zachary Fucale will not start against Sweden.

Game time is 11am EST.
