Bulldogs fall for first time in seven games

Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Club

The Hamilton Bulldogs saw their six game winning streak and seven game point streak come to an end losing 3-1 to Rochester on home ice.

The Dogs were back on home ice for the first time since December 27th and could not find a way to replicate their success on the road where they took all eight points from a four game road trip.

Robert Mayer would make the start, his first action since winning the Spengler Cup with Swiss club Geneve-Servette over the Christmas break.

The team started off well controlling the play for the first period outshooting Rochester 14-5 in the opening frame.

Greg Pateryn would open the scoring for Hamilton after Brandon MacLean took a hooking penalty in the Dogs zone. Pateryn fired a weak wrist shot from the point that found it's way through a Tarnasky screen and Rochester goalie Nathan Lieuwen.

Despite Hamilton controlling play for much of the first half of the game, Rochester began to take over and after a series that saw a number of good saves from Robert Mayer and some solid defensive work it was a shot from Chad Ruhwedel that was tipped by Brandon MacLean past Mayer evening the score.

The first half of the third period passed by without incident but near the halfway mark of the period it was Luke Adam with a great pass in front of the net to Johan Larsson who slid it past a prone Mayer.

The Bulldogs would mount some minor offense near the end of the third but nearly immediately after Mayer was pulled for the extra skater it was Adam who would find the empty cage to ice the game.

Robert Mayer didn't have much work early on but ended up stopping 26 shots in the loss.

"We lost, which sucks," said Mayer. "We were on a [six] game and to come back and lose that game at home is especially bitter for me."

Coach Lefebvre said the team needed to be better at closing the door.

"We need the killer instince," said Lefebvre. "We left them in the game too long and we paid for it."

The attendance for tonight's game was a solid 4,950, one of the better crowds the Dogs have seen this season.

Hamilton's next game is tomorrow when they host the Iowa Wild.
