Bulldogs Player of the Week: Robert Mayer

Robert Mayer watching the Bulldogs play at the other side of the ice - Justin Dahan

This past week Robert Mayer had a 1-0-0-1 record to go along with 70 saves on 74 shots

Robert Mayer was clearly hungry to play this past weekend. He had sat out three in a row in favour of Cedrick Desjardins, but on Friday when he took the crease he intended to keep it, and that's why we named him this week's Bulldogs Player of the Week.

After Cedrick Desjardins lost three straight games (no fault of his own, the Bulldogs failed to score a single goal in those three outings), Robert Mayer came in to face Rockford on Friday. Mayer turned aside 35 of the 36 shots he faced and earned second star honours, in the Bulldogs 3-1 win.

Despite seeing a lot of action the night before Sylvain Lefebvre decided to start Mayer in back to backs on Saturday. While fatigue may have been an issue for most goalies, especially after sitting on the bench for 3 straight games prior to his back to backs, Mayer turned out another impressive effort. Mayer turned aside another 35 shots in the Bulldogs shootout loss, and for a team struggling with offense, also added the only assist on Brendan Gallagher's goal.

Overall Mayer stopped 70 of the 74 shots he faced in 6 periods and a 5 minute OT. In the shootout he stopped 3/5 attempts.

Outside of his play, Mayer also displayed some class during Friday's game. An errant puck flew over the boards and struck a kid in the face, he must have been 8-9 years old, on the next whistle Mayer skated over and, with help, gave the kid his game used stick. This move drew the admiration of the Bulldogs fans and Mayer received a standing ovation for his thoughtfulness.

This is Mayer's second Bulldog of the week award.
