Final 2013 Montreal Canadiens Prospect Roundup

Jamie Sabau

Nearly every Habs prospect's season is over outside of the ones in the NHL, so let's recap the last week of the season for those that ended up in Hamilton.

Sweden

Name Age League Team Timeline Games Goals Assists Points
Sebastian Collberg 19 Elitserien Frolunda Regular Season 35 6 3 9
Elitserien Frolunda Playoffs 5 0 2 2
Allsvenskan Orebro HK Regular Season 15 6 2 8
World Juniors Sweden Total 6 4 2 6
AHL Hamilton Regular Season 2 0 0 0

Last week 2 0 0 0

Collberg finally debuted for the Bulldogs, playing 2 of the final 3 games of the season as the coaching staff didn't want to overwork him coming off of a concussion. Collberg went -2 in the two games, and got 5 shots on net. Collberg will be back in Sweden next year, but giving him a taste of North American pro hockey couldn't have hurt.

Magnus Nygren 22 Elitserien Farjstads Regular Season 51 13 19 32
Elitserien Farjstads Playoffs total 10 1 3 4
Last week 0 0 0 0

An error in paper work prevented Magnus Nygren from coming over to Canada to play out the Bulldogs' season, but I have to wonder if he'll be here in October to challenge for a roster spot. There doesn't seem to be much further he can go in the Elitserien, so it's time for the next challenge.

Erik Nystrom 19 Allsvenskan Kalskrona HK Regular Season 23 5 6 11
Allsvenskan Kalskrona HK Qualifications 5 0 2 2
Super Elit U20 Modo U20 Regular Season 22 8 16 24

Nystrom's season is over and was recapped last report.

Czech Republic

Daniel Pribyl 20 Czech Extraliga Sparta Praha Regular Season 42 12 10 22
Czech Extraliga Sparta Praha Playoffs 6 0 0 0

Pribyl's season is over and was recapped last report. One has to wonder though, if Bergevin not trying to get him to come over to Hamilton this year says anything about his future as a prospect.

Canadian Hockey League

Name Age League Team Timeline Games Goals Assists Points
Brady Vail 19 OHL Windsor Regular Season 68 20 35 55
AHL Hamilton Regular Season 12 1 3 4
Last week 6 0 2 2

Vail only put up 11 shots in his 12 AHL games, but 4 points and a +2 rating signify that he wasn't out of his depth. The defense minded forward has one more year in the OHL before he'll make the Bulldogs full time. If Vail makes the NHL at some point, it will likely be on the back of his defensive play, but next year as a 19 year old, bigger offensive numbers will be looked for by the Habs.

Name Age League Team Timeline Games Goals Assists Points
Olivier Archambault 20 QMJHL Drummondville Regular Season 64 32 34 66
QMJHL Drummondville Playoffs 5 2 4 6
AHL Hamilton Regular Season 10 1 1 2
AHL Hamilton Last Week 6 1 1 2

Archambault waiting until the second last game of the year to score his first professional goal, an unassisted tally that temporarily brought the Bulldogs to within one. Archambault also didn't manage a shot a game in the AHL, grabbing 9 in his 10 games played. The Canadiens face a bit of a dilemma with Archambault. He's offensively gifted enough to make a difference for the Bulldogs depth next season, but he may not be ready for that level full time. It may be an overage OHL year for him next season.

Name Age League Team Timeline Games Goals Assists Points
Charles Hudon 18 QMJHL Chicoutimi Regular Season 56 30 41 71
QMJHL Chicoutimi Playoffs 6 5 5 10
AHL Hamilton Regular Season 9 1 2 3
AHL Hamilton Last Week 6 0 2 2

Remember that time that we left Hudon off of our top 25 under 25 in the summer? Right after the vote, Stephan Cooper noted that we may have overlooked a serious talent, but even then it wasn't clear just how good Hudon is. The youngest player in the AHL, he won the Bulldogs Player of the Week in his first as a Bulldog, and lead the team in shots over the 9 games that he played with 22. Hudon is a phenomenal talent, so of course Trevor Timmins stole him in the 5th round. Justin Dahan caught up with Hudon for a short interview last week.

Darren Dietz 19 WHL Saskatoon Regular Season 72 24 34 58
WHL Saskatoon Playoffs total 4 1 1 2

Dietz is sitting on the sidelines with the Blades until they host the Memorial Cup.

Tim Bozon 18 WHL Kamloops Regular Season 69 36 55 91
WHL Kamloops Playoffs total 5 2 0 2
Last week 2 0 0 0

Bozon is now back in the lineup for the Blazers, but possibly still injured since he failed to record a point, went -1 and took 4 minutes in penalties. Either way, Bozon being back is a positive.

Mac Bennett 22 NCAA Michigan Regular Season 32 6 12 18

Bennett's season is over and was recapped last report.

Danny Kristo 22 NCAA North Dakota Season total 40 26 26 52
AHL Hamilton Regular Season 9 0 3 3
Last week 6 0 2 2

Kristo wasn't able to manage a goal in the AHL this season on 14 shots over 9 games, but he seemed to get much better over the last stretch of his season. It wasn't the kind of production expected of the 22 year old sniper, but then again who has actually produced as much as expected in Hamilton this season? Justin Dahan caught up with Kristo last week for a short interview.

Liga Supa Glöorpf HK Playoffs total 11 107 0 107
Last week 0 0 0 0

With Glöorpf eliminated from playoff contention, Sprague was invited to join the Hamilton Bulldogs - as per subsection 11.3.3, 'Player Transfers', of the 1979 SALT II treaty - but refused to do so after getting wind of having been packaged by the Montreal Canadiens in an unsuccessful trade for Canucks goaltender, Roberto Luongo, at the NHL trade deadline. The genesis of the rumoured trade was Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin's recent remarks characterizing the cap savings arising from the Scott Gomez waiver buyout as 'fun money'. Ribinsoin, Jr.'s agent, Jarome Iginla - the Boston thing was just the tip of the iceberg - informed the Canadiens that the trade would have been in direct violation of Sprague's NTC - No Twins Clause - a concession Iggy successfully negotiated with Glöorpf, noting the probability of an errant assist disproportionately rises when a team's roster includes two players who creep Sprague out. The situation took an uglier turn later in the week when Sprague's camp issued the following statement via the History Channel's twitter feed, "Jesus Christ, what? What the fuck is it? Fuck off!" Barring a resolution to the impasse, Sprague is expected to remain in Switzerland to usher in the 2013 beet-growing season.
