is was elite Swedish defensive prospect and all-around model human being Magnus Nygren's birthday, so I thought I'd throw up some highlights, stats, and scouting reports to show off his Swedish excellence.
Amateur Scouting Report
In case you haven't seen Magnus play, here's what I can tell you from limited in-person observation and some video:
-Massively powerful and devastatingly accurate shot. Both his wrist shot and slap shot are unreal.
-Great head-up breakout passer. Seems to always hit the forward's tape as his team streaks out of their zone.
-Nice physical side. He's a pretty big boy at 6'1", 195 lbs, and he seems to use his size well in battles around the net. He also seems pretty chippy. I've seen him cross check guys in development camp.
-Fluid skater. Good agility and speed (nothing extraordinary though). He is definitely a mobile defenseman, although I haven't really seen him rush the puck. He prefers to pass it out of the zone.
-Overall impression: Gifted offensive defenseman who nevertheless keeps it simple. More of a quarterback than a running back. I've seen him compared to Raphael Diaz, and I like that comparison. He's like a bigger Diaz with Shea Weber's shot (not exaggerating here, I'm actually serious). If he learns how to play solid defensive hockey at the NHL level, he could be a great third-pairing D with PP duties. I'd say his ceiling is as a journeyman top-4 D, but he's more likely to be a third-pairing D with the Habs.
Here's some highlights from the birthday boy:
Happy Birthday, Nygga! Hope to see you in the Bleu Blanc Rouge jersey next season (and for good)!
