One of the Montreal Canadiens top defensemen may not be returning to the Canadiens blue line next season.
Top 4 defensemen are hard to come by, this years UFA class only including Brooks Opriks, Anrei Markov and Matt Niskanen. Andrei will be demanding a hefty price tag and pay rise from the Habs and if here dosen’t get it there he will elsewhere.
Montreal’s Russian Gun (Markov) and his agent Sergei Berezin are quite keen on staying in the French capital of Canada. In the contract negotiations with Montreal General Manager Marc Bergevin the Russians side will be advocating for a contract of both term and price as in a few years Markov will not get a lot, as he is declining.
Andrei’s Camp is currently asking for a contract of 18 Million Dollars over 3 years at 6 million per (TSN-Bob Mckenzie). While the Habs Camp is aiming for 10 million over 2 years at 5 million per year.
This can change soon as Montreal is quite adamant on a short cheap contract. Montreal may have to lower expectations or Andrei will walk to Free Agency to a team such as New York Islanders or Philidelphia who can give a big contract due to their cap situation.
We can hope Andrei will stay in Montreal, otherwise Les Rouge Blanc et Bleu will have to pursue other options which will be tough as now in this CBA era UFAs tend to get overpaid.
