This is a Habs blog, and I am in no way a Leafs fan. But I am saddly aware that the Toronto area (often called the GTA) has produced some significant talent in the last 10 years. One would think that Montreal leagues should look closely at what Toronto based leagues are doing with the development of their players.
One area that Montreal does excell at over Toronto is the development of NHL quality goalies.
I was curious to see how many players from the three Team Canada Rosters (the one real one, and the 'second' and 'third' teams as listed in MikeObrand article 'Naming Team Canada's "B team" ') were from the GTA. It's a long list... one full of talent. These are only the players listed on the rosters. No doubt there are countless more players from the area not mentionned.
(in no particular order)
* Close by, worth mentionning...
Corey Perry (Peterborough)
Mike Smith (Kingston)
Matt Duchene (Haliburton)
The list of players from the Montreal area on the Olympic Rosters is composed of few players...
Martin St. Louis
Ugh.... at one point Montreal was producing a lot of talented players, but that appears to no longer be the case (if you go by players worthy of being on Canada's roster anyways).
