Video from the Habs Rookie Camp Scrimmage (Sept. 7)

Johnathan Leger (@crosseyed_mofo)

I was at the Complexe Sportif Bell on Saturday to see the Rookie Camp scrimmage. The good news? I filmed it. The bad news? I got there a little late, so I have roughly half the scrimmage and all of the brief shootout they did at the end. All in all, approximately 30 minutes of footage. My camera skills are very limited, and I was trying to actively watch the scrimmage as I was filming, so the footage is pretty shaky. Nevertheless, it's a nice glimpse at some of the Habs' top prospects.

Part 3 (featuring the shootout and McCarron's PS goal) is coming soon.

I'm still under the word limit, so here are some impressions from the scrimmage.

-Connor Crisp is a terrible skater. He looked awkward out there. Why the hell did Bergevin pick him in the third round?

-Pateryn has the tools to be a decent third-pairing defensive D who can still make good first passes and put the puck on net.

-Erik Nystrom looks pretty good. Great hands, good skater. He could be a nice surprise on the Habs' roster in a few years, but will probably level off as a decent depth player.

-I was happy that Hinds was invited. He plays for the Armada, my local junior team. He's a solid two-way guy with a good frame who can win puck battles. He's also a good skater, and he has some untapped offensive skills which should start emerging this season, in his second year with the Armada. He looked really good in the scrimmage, with one shift near the end of Part 2 where he wins puck battles along the boards, makes a nice pass for a good scoring chance, and goes hard on the forecheck.
