The Montreal Canadiens have signed centre David Desharnais to a 4-year, $14-million contract extension.

Early this morning, TSN's Darren Dreger tweeted that the Canadiens were set to announce the extension, and the term and money were later reported by Renaud Lavoie of RDS. It's not so much the extension that's puzzling as the term and the dollars involved. That's a lot for a player who's basically some guy who plays sheltered minutes with first or second line linemates. He doesn't exactly face the toughest competition, and the last time I checked, his numbers weren't exactly phenomenal this season. This also begs the question of whether there is now a logjam at centre. People on Twitter are already freaking out about Lars Eller or Tomas Plekanec will be traded. I am really negative on this deal. Please convince me otherwise or agree with me in the comments.
