Canadiens vs Panthers Top Six Minutes - Paging Guy Boucher

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

Let us all count our blessings that Montreal plays in the Eastern Conference.

  • First off I should note that there was decent attendance in Florida tonight, congratulations to all the Habs fans for making it happen. Finding a Panthers jersey in the crowd when the Habs are in town is the NHL's equivalent of Where's Waldo.
  • Desharnais has a decent shot, and he needs to start using it. He thinks pass-first way too much. I'm surprised he doesn't try to pass to Pacioretty during shootouts.
  • Pacioretty is a goal scorer, no one can take that away from him, but tends to be lazy when it comes to the back-check. I wish he'd put a bit more pep in his step in terms of defensive coverage.
  • Rene Bourque got robbed of a goal due to a ghost high-stick call. You have one job linesmen. It's tough enough to score with our anemic offense as it is, without having perfectly good goals recalled.
  • Speaking of which, Montreal got another goal called off tonight. Galchenyuk was cross checked into the goalie and Daniel Briere scored a perfectly legal goal. May the crotch of the referees be infested by the fleas of a thousand camels.
  • Where's Michal Plutnar when you need him?
  • We could take the easy out and blame the refs, but the reality is Montreal probably deserved to lose. They shouldn't be struggling against teams like Florida.
  • The Panthers tv crew makes me yearn for a Jack Edwards broadcast. They are -that- bad. One of the worst in the business, perhaps only second to Altitude TV (Avalanche)
  • If I had a nickel for every time Diaz missed the net, I would have more than enough to afford accuracy lessons for Raphael, and probably enough left over to buy season tickets in Sunrise.
  • Pacioretty rumours need to stop. Francois Gagnon needs to stop talking, full stop.
  • The second period was less fun to watch than a WWF sick animal commercial, you know, the ones with the Sarah McLachlan song playing in the background.
  • The Markov - Emelin pairing crashed harder than the Soviet Union on December 26th, 1991. Markov isn't quick enough to compensate for Emelin's lack of positional awareness. Emelin needs to be dropped to the third pairing about 10 games ago.
  • It's time to give Michael Bournival a permanent role in the top 9. We lack scoring and energy, and that's exactly what he's brought in his limited minutes with the club.
  • I think the Panthers are little better than their record indicates. Guys like Barkov and Bjugstad will become dominant forces in the NHL.  That being said they're 28th in GAA. Montreal failed to produce much sustained offense and that's not depressing, at all.
  • Subban was Montreal's best forward, and that's definitely not depressing, at all.
  • Montreal can't score for the life of them, and they had two perfectly good goals refused, which is the least depressing thing of them all.
  • Tom Gilbert is so much better than Douglas Murray, Francis Bouillon and even Alexei Emelin at the moment. And he's only a $900k cap hit.
  • It's time to give Greg Pateryn a legitimate shot with Montreal. He's probably Hamilton's best defenceman, even though most people would point to Tinordi or Beaulieu. Pateryn was solid during his trial last year and didn't look out of place at all. He can't possibly be worse than Bouillon or Murray, which isn't saying much, but it's probably time we give him a reasonable shot. We need some stability on the bottom pairing, and I wouldn't hesitate to give him a shot on second pairing if need be.
  • Despite what happened with the disallowed goals tonight, it was an uninspiring performance versus a mediocre team, on the heels of an uninspiring month. Montreal actually had a winning record in December, but everyone that's watched the games knows they've been playing at a sub-par level for quite a while now.
  • Michel Therrien is probably the least cerebral coach in the NHL. Robert Rice said it best. "Carey Price, PK Subban, Max Pacioretty & the Eastern Conference are the 4 reasons Michel Therrien still has a job".  At this point he's playing some mutant Cunneyworth-Martin hybrid system, and it's perhaps the worst hockey I have witnessed in the last several seasons. His coaching style seems to be limited to "Puck on net. Let's go! Hustle hard guys! Puck deep!", and I think the shtick is wearing thin.
  • Speaking of which, does anyone have Guy Boucher's phone number?
  • Montreal's next massive struggle game is versus Carolina on Tuesday.
  • Speaking of which, does anyone have the number for Alcoholics Anonymous?

Three Stars:

The Habs just need to accept that they're a grinding team, guys.

2nd: The reaction to Briere not being on the bench:

Traded for Cammalleri?

1st: Ian Murray's uber dad joke.
