Canadiens vs Coyotes Top Six Minutes - Coyotes dumped, Coyotes chased.

Bruce Bennett

The Canadiens played an abysmal first period, after which the Markov-Subban defensive pairing was broken up. The Habs defeated the Coyotes with a strong third period.

  • A win!
  • Alright, a gripe first. This team. This is getting really frustrating. Dump and chase is something even bad teams don't do anymore. In one of the earlier podcasts Berkshire and I were talking about it and I said it wasn't a strategy, and he said "it's a hope." You can't play 82 games of hope. And you have players good enough that you can afford not to play 82 games of hope.
  • Dave Tippett is my man-crush. Here is a fantastic story on him from a year and a half ago that you should read if you have the time.
  • Are the Habs generating any kind of scoring chances? A few in a row, you say? Time for one of them (Daniel Briere) to take a dumb penalty a million miles from the Habs net.
  • The one Coyotes fan in the universe was at the Bell Centre tonight. I saw him, he cheered after that Habs own goal. This wasn't a dig at the Coyotes fan base. I wanted to point out that the guy had a sweetass old-school jersey on.
  • I forgot what a fucking diver Mike Smith is. Even the NESN teaser for the story on Facebook was "Come on, man."
  • Mike Smith's contract, hahahahahaha.
  • True story: I thought Mike Smith was American until he got invited to Team Canada's orientation camp. I can't have been the only one.
  • I miss having Antoine Vermette in the division. For aesthetic reasons.
  • Oliver Ekman-Larsson. We are a fan.
  • Four-minute PP, one shot on goal for the Coyotes. That team can't be much fun.
  • Also, what the hell was that four-minute penalty? Two extra minutes for being a fan favourite, is that how it works?
  • The P.K. Subban - Andrei Markov pairing was split up tonight. So now instead of having one objectively good pairing and two crap pairings we have one objectively crap pairing and two crap pairings but with an elite defenseman on each.
  • Max Pacioretty and the posts.
  • Alex Galchenyuk and Mike Smith's saves.
  • I am enjoying Michael Bournival still. You guys?
  • Rene Bourque compliment for JD__: well he didn't look terrible.
  • When the Habs score goals, angels sing and nothing hurts.
  • Friend of EOTP DrDougBoston tweets: "Chris Higgins Hat Trick for Pacioretty tonight. #ThreePosts"
  • I hate to be That Guy but sometimes I want to yell at Tomas Plekanec to SHOOOOOOOT instead of look around for the best option, because usually (especially on a shorthanded breakway) he is the best option. Shoot, you turtleneck-wearing, goatee-sporting, Selke-overlooked, two-way-playing god.
  • So that third period was not bad. The shots as well as the Extra Skater page for this game evened out thanks to that period.
  • (Sidebar: Extra Skater is life-changing and I get so much use out of it, but in the last Habs stretch, it's been killing my soul.)
  • Wow that last-minute defensive play by Josh Gorges. Let's propose to it.
  • Suck it, Mike Ribeiro.
  • The score was 3-1 but the Coyotes scored no goals.
  • But the Habs still had THREE SHOTS TOTAL IN THE WHOLE FIRST PERIOD what is that oh my lord.
  • EOTP Third Star: Pinkoir with "We have to win! We need to extend our streak so that next year there can be a player on the ‘Yotes who wasn't BORN when they won here last."
  • EOTP Second Star: courtnall's response to a commenter who had missed the first two periods and thought the Habs looked okay: "No they play one period a game, you got lucky."
  • EOTP First Star: Max An defining a Paciorettrick as "3 posts, 2 goals, and an anchor."
  • So this is my last Top Six Minutes for a few weeks. I'll be back in January and then I have a whole bunch of them in a row. I'll try and post some regular articles in the meantime. Hopefully by the time I'm back on the TSMs, the Habs will be non-shitty again. Happy holidays, everyone! Don't drink and drive.
