Hamilton Bulldogs player of the week - Martin St. Pierre

Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Club

The captain came up big for the Dogs this week to claim the prestigious player of the week honour.

It was a big week for captain Martin St. Pierre registering his first three goals as a Hamilton Bulldog including the game winner against Toronto on Friday.

St. Pierre has been excellent so far this season registering eight points in seven games but before this week none of his points were goals.

He remedied that in spectacular fashion on Friday with near identical goals to tie the game with eight minutes left in the third then winning the game in overtime.

He added another goal on Saturday against Abbotsford to put the Dogs up 2-0, a lead they would blow eventually, losing in the shootout.

St. Pierre has quickly earned respect as the newest captain of the Bulldogs, knowing his role is to offer veteran leadership to a young Bulldogs team.

"When I signed here from the management up in Montreal to the coaches here it's just a matter of rub off what you've learned these past ten years and as a captain last year [in Rockford]," said St. Pierre.

Continuing a trend started by previous players of the week Greg Pateryn and Louis Leblanc, St. Pierre has been called up to the Habs as a reward for his fast start to the season.

Honourable Mentions: Nathan Beaulieu and Magnus Nygren. The Dogs top powerplay tandem had a good pair of games with Nygren registering a trio of assists and Beaulieu notching two of his own.

Nygren's three points brings him up to eight on the season in only ten games, an excellent start for the rookie defenseman.

Beaulieu's two assists were his first points in four games since returning from Montreal.

The pairing helped the Dogs powerplay go 3 for 8 a key part of the three points the team managed to claim.
