Brian Gionta returns to Montreal for family reasons

Perry Nelson-USA TODAY Sports

The Montreal Canadiens will presumably be without Brian Gionta for their game against the Canucks, maybe more.

In a bit of surprise news this afternoon, the Montreal Canadiens announced that captain Brian Gionta would be leaving the team and going back to Montreal for undisclosed family reasons. With respect for the Gionta family I'd like to ask everyone to refrain from speculating about those reasons in the comments section.

It would be very unlikely that Gionta is able to rejoin the team in time for their game against the Vancouver Canucks tomorrow, so Ryan White will draw into the lineup and Brandon Prust will likely move up to take the right wing spot on the third line with Rene Bourque and David Desharnais.

Whatever the Gionta family is dealing with, all the best to them.
