Greg Wyshynski Knocks It Out Of The Park

It's not often a post goes up on EOTP just to link to another post on another website, but Puck Daddy's Greg Wyshynksi knocked one out of the park this morning, writing about the fake moral outrage trumped up by fans and media after Canadiens fans cheered when Zdeno Chara was hit in the face with the puck on a clearing attempt by Tomas Plekanec.

As for those Habs fans who thought it was classless to cheer, all I can say is that I didn't even see what happened, I just happened to be cheering. I didn't even know Chara was on the ice, and it kind of looked like he jumped into it. I didn't even know I was watching a hockey game.

After Chara was cheered like a champion gladiator upon returning to Boston after breaking Pacioretty’s neck, the false offense to this is just absurd. As long as Chara is in the league I have no sympathy for him.

The absence of mention of behaviour from Bruins fans, except from the last, snarky line and video, is icing on the cake.

Gotta love Claude Julien ragging about the American anthem gettin booed too…

He’s right about the ridiculousness of the outrage over the cheers, but to say he’s hitting it out of the park is to imply that it’s normal to cheer for injuries and I don’t agree at all. That behavior is simply dumb and shouldn’t be accepted. However, context matters and Chara in Montreal is certainly a case were you can understand why people would be pleased to see him hurt.

The grandstanding and lectures about classiness are ridiculous, especially coming from a fanbase like Boston that is pretty much the antithesis of classy behavior when it comes to violence and injuries in hockey.

The hitting it out of the park is in how he takes down those who are grandstanding.

Ok, but most of his piece is about how fans enjoy violence and think he’s wrong there. I don’t think it’s that big of a deal (hockey culture and all that stuff), but blood thirst is certainly of my least favorite aspects of hockey fandom.

I guess that makes me one of those pretentious Habs fan the commenters on the Wyshynski post have so many kinds words for ;)

by Hypnotoad on Feb 16, 2012 5:30 PM EST up reply actions

I think his point is that the bloodthirst in the heat of the moment is universal, no matter how much you might regret it after, so moral grandstanding about it is pathetic.

This years stupid hockeyprospectus proposed trade target for Montreal:

Derrick Brassard.

http://www.puckprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=1252

Because he will help with the powerplay (facepalm). If he had bothered to look at the career PP work of other forwards in the lineup he might realize that this really isn’t a personnel problem, especially at forward (defense one certainly could argue). And if it was its not one to be solved by a mid-range talent like Brassard. 5 forwards in the roster they have right now did better than Brassard’s so special 4.33 points per 60 last year.

Plus Montreal already has at least 3 centerman as good or better than Brassard.

Not quite as bad as Ville Leino the 5 on 5 scoring solution last summer but in a similar vein.

He might also have wanted to look at the team’s 5-on-4 shot rates (still in the top half of the league despite Randy) and their shooting percentage (still worst in the league, but now at a semi-respectable .916… which is still less than they get 5-on-5).

Oh, and that guy they wanted the Habs to get as a long-term core player to help the team’s bad even-strength game? 0.28 goals, 1.21 points per 60 at evens. Yeah, I’m sure that would have helped a lot. For comparison, the guy they DID get, for the same cap hit no less: 1.03 goals, 2.27 points per 60…

Stuff like this is why I don’t bother buying their stuff. Where’s a facepalm emoticon when you need one?

Ha. I guess if it wasn’t going to be Brassard it would have been someone like Jack Johnson. Draft pedigree, French/Habs fan, not as good as people think they are, pretty big contract. It’s a shame Luke Schenn isn’t a Habs fan or we could hear a lot about him being exactly what the Habs need.

As much as I salivate at the daydream of the Habs acquiring someone like Jeff Carter (despite the term on the contract) I think the D is the most pressing need. Even with Emelin coming along nicely and Markov back to form (or even #2 form) I would like to see another top-4 guy to bump Emelin down the pecking order for a year or two.

Skimming through the article it’s the usual Puck Prospectus NHL analysis, all goals and GVT and no context (which I think is the real value of micorstats at this point). Sarich may be on the ice for few shots against but he’s doing it against 3rd-pairing comps. The problems for Ottawa’s defense are probably more difficult to fix than getting a #6 guy.

Sets the market price though, other teams will be looking for bottom six help and Moen brings a bunch a skills you’d want in a playoff run.

Based on this and the Grossman trade I think we can be comfortable in guessing the price for Moen and Gill will be a 2nd rounders or equivalent valued assets.

Because of the Paccioretty incident, Chara will always be booed and deserves to be. His reckless play, during a situation when it didn’t need to be, almost cost Max his life. It was not just a hockey play.

by Ashok11 on Feb 17, 2012 1:03 AM EST reply actions

And less than a year later, Pacioretty recklessly knocks Kris Letang out for several months with an elbow blast to the dome. A shame he didn’t learn from his own experience.

by Matt Shaffer on Feb 17, 2012 8:16 AM EST up reply actions

Which came less than a year after Letang recklessly drilled Spezza right in the numbers, sending him flying into the boards helplessly and causing him to miss a couple of months.

No suspension for Letang.

It’s a shame that Letang didn’t learn anything from this experience, otherwise he would not have done the exact same thing to Burmistrov, less than a year later.

I’ve forgotten some of the details of the hit, but yeah, I remember it being shoulder hitting chin/nose on a player playing the puck and leaning forward. You know, like Malone on Campoli… which Malone got off scott free for.

Well, this will obviously swing back and forth according to fan opinion, but I do disagree with Wyshynski, that the normal view of fans is to cheer injuries.

Also didn’t have audio of Wednesday’s game. Was out with some friends and just came back to the bar to check the score every ten minutes or so. Wasn’t aware of this until yesterday afternoon.

On the article’s posted video’s though, classlessness aside, the Raymond injury was booed, not cheered. The fans thought it was a fake, or overly dramatic to slow the game down, and that’s taken in context of the first 5 games of the Finals at that point.

They booed, didn’t cheer that he was injured by Boychuck

by 13_Legion on Feb 17, 2012 12:09 PM EST reply actions

I could really care less how fans perceive other fanbases. It is always done with a level of righteousness that is absurd. All fans are the same. I saw how Bruin fans reacted to Horton’s injury, so any fan that says the Chara thing was clean would have the opposite opinion if one of their top prospects was lying on the ice courtesy of the exact same hit.

For every 5-10 idiotic homer fans there is 1 who is reasonable and centered for every franchise. I don’t defend any of the fans in my fanbase because they speak for themselves. If 10,000 people wanted to cheer Chara’s injury, good for them. It doesn’t make them less classy, it makes them normal fans.

“Stay classy Montreal” is a ridiculously self righteous statement.

by 13_Legion on Feb 17, 2012 4:41 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t think there is a right answer to the whole debate because everybody cheered that injury for a different reason. Some because they hate Chara, some because it is always nice to see Superman show that he is mortal, some because they hate the Bruins etc etc.

I know I irrationally took enjoyment at Horton being hurt in the moment. Not because I hate Horton or felt he deserved it, but I wanted to see Bruin fans suffer the same discomfort and was curious to see their reaction.

In retrospect it was wasted hate and just proved the assertion that the majority of them would feel victimized like we did with the Pacioretty hit.

Game 6 of the Finals at that point. More than enough bad blood on both sides by then, don’t think either side would have put anything past the other by then.

I don’t know if I have ever thought a player was faking an injury. I have seen players fake being high sticked, but the only player that I can recall out and out faking an injury like Raymond’s was Ribeiro against the Bruins.

Happy that someone is hurt, or calling an assumed BS when you think someone is faking.

No, I really don’t believe that’s worse if you’re trying to compare.

Regardless, I really don’t care when it boils down to reality.

by 13_Legion on Feb 17, 2012 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

I think a consistent assumption that anyone who’s injured that isn’t a Bruin is faking is far worse than cheering a guy getting hurt who nearly killed a top player for our team last year.

Apparently we’re getting Blake Geoffrion, which, while knowing nothing about him as a hockey player, is kind of cool.

by MathMan on Feb 17, 2012 2:20 PM EST reply actions

We’re also getting a 2nd round pick, so it looks like a good deal for a guy who really was starting to struggle at evens.

Gill and a conditional 5th for a 2nd rounder this year, Geoffrion, and Slaney. I believe the conditional 5th is predicated on Geoffrion playing 40 games with the Habs next season.

Which I’d argue is unlikely given his current development.

So, I’ll call it an upcoming 2nd rounder and two warm bodies for Gill. That’s a lot more than I expected we’d see, even having disagreed with someone at Hurley’s a couple of nights ago who suggested the Habs could get a 2nd rounder for Gill.
