All my Life ive been asked why im a Habs Fan, and I always reply with the same answer. Its in my Blood. You might think its an odd response coming from an english speaking Ontario boy, who lives just over an hour north of the Air Canada Centre, but if you met my grandfather it would be easy to see what I mean. He was born in Mimico Ontario, and according to my grandmother always played Lacrosse in the summer and Hockey in the Winter. As far back as she can remember He cheered for the Canadiens, Jean Beliveau was his favorite player, but I remember as a child watching him wait in a huge line of people getting autographs just to shake Rocket Richards hand. I was about 6-7 at the time and had no idea some of the greatness packed into that small Midland Arena, but he tried his best to make me understand exactly what i was getting into. They didnt give me much choice honestly, judging by my handmade montreal forum baby blanket, It was apparent from the start that he expected me to follow in his footsteps. Im sure it helped that we share a first name.
I cant honestly remember the first Habs game i watched, but ill guess it was saturday night at my grandparents. What i do remember is the first time I felt like I was actually part of the team. When I started using terms like "we" when i talked about the HABS. This also happened to be the start of a long life of defending my choice of teams. The year was 1993, i was 9 years old and like many of my generation Patrick Roy was a God to me. I stayed up to watch every game of that playoff run, even those long overtime games on school nights. When "we" won the cup that year It cemented what had been planted into my heart from the start. Monteal is the Greatest team ever. Later that summer grandpa took me to the Hockey Hall of Fame to see the Stanley Cup. I remember walking thru the Hall with him, and seeing the exhibits, but the moment that sticks is reading the cup, every side, every level, there was montreal canadiens all over it. Living in Leaf LA LA LAND hasnt been the easiest thing, there have been many heated arguements over my years defending my choice of teams, and ive learned the easiest way to end an arguement is this series of questions. 1) What trophy do they play for every year? and who has won it the most? Theres only one right answer!
So Maybe the truth is im not a Habs fan by blood, maybe im just another crazy hockey fan, that would like to believe that theres something more that gave me my hardcore HAB-it. That being said, theres a special feeling of coming home everytime i drive 8hrs across the province to the Bell Centre for a game...... People ive never met seem like family, and maybe just maybe we all share a little bit of something inside that makes us bleed BLEU BLANC ROUGE. Recently ive been blessed with my first son, so when it came time for a baby blanket, there was only one choice..... Baby Blankets
