Canadiens sign Jeff Woywitka
Woywitka, a veteran defenceman of 251 NHL games, has signed a one year, two-way contract with Montreal. He would have to clear waivers in order to be sent to Hamilton.
The signing is a depth move, possibly in case of a training camp injury, and is reminiscient of the Canadiens signing Alexandre Picard last year, except for a big, slow, left handed defensive defenceman rather than a smaller, mobile, right handed offensive defenceman. It also decreases the likelihood that we will see Brendon Nash or Mark Mitera called up in case of injury.
Woywitka could make the NHL team as a spare even without an injury, as the Canadiens have been known to carry 8 defencemen in the past.

you got "left-handed" and "big" correct
I’ve never heard Woywitka described as slow — in fact, I believe most scouting reports list his skating and mobility as one of his better assets. His defensive game has been criticized at times, but this is an excellent depth move with two unproven guys in Diaz and Yemelin and two guys coming back after major knee surgery.
